View Full Version : 3-4 Inch Lift?

Im starting to do some research on what lift to put on the wrangler. The body lift is going to go. Should I put a 3 or 4 inch lift on it? What brand and type of lift would you suggest. I don't really think a long arm is necessary. BUT i don't want to spend an arm and a leg neither. I read a few reviews. Some had issues with lower control arm and some bushings. IE teraflex, Skyjacker.
I have heard that BDS is LIFETIME Guarantied no questions asked. I like the fact of that type of warranty. any thoughts.

For the price with life warranty, this is pretty good! Any more and you get into double money and more headache with drivetrain issues, control arm replacement and so forth!

Well cherokee has the BDS lifts. He also has the BDS control arms for around 150 each. They are nice and heavy duty. That might be an option.

www.topguncustomz.com they have a huge selection of jeep lifts a 4" skyjacker is $1000 or you can get some lifts for over 4k just depends on what you want to do and spend.

I read up on skyjacker. Their bushings arnt the best. I am looking more towards what people have experience with and what not.I can google all day long...........but first hand is always the best.

You've seen my jeep. I keep trying to save up for the BDS but life gets in the way!! I've seen a few around on friends rigs and they love them. With the terrain around here, you get mud and crawling, a high lift (4.5-6 inch or over) is not optimal! the 2.5-4 inch lift gives good clearance and maintains a low enough center of gravity. Also, anything three and over requires you to start changing drive line setups. When i do manage to get saved up, I'm planning on the BDS 3" for mine. With a dream of portal axles one day!!!!!!

If I ever buy a jeep it's Rock Krawler for me. I agree you do get what you pay for that's why I don't understand wasting money for these cheap lifts like the one on my truck it sucks. Bushings will always wear out but how quick with how much abuse would be the question to ask.

I looked into those last night. Thats probably more than stacy is going to let me spend on a lift. Im thinking really no more than around 1200. But thats just a thought.....

combine some rubixpres and OME? get the best of both worlds, or just save up another month and spring for the rubi 4" long travel.

What's the goal with this lift? Bigger tires, flex, what because that is where you should base your decision and how hard are ya'll willing to bash the jeep? If you just want to do the trail rides and not anything really hard then go with the cheaper lifts. If you want to build this thing into something that can rock crawl, deep mud or something like that than spend the money or be pissed the whole time for having an inadequate lift. Just my 2 cents.

Well this is Stacy's jeep. She hates the suspension it has now. Maybe she should put her 2 cents worth on what she wants to do with it. She says she likes the suspension in the postal better...ahahhahahah. What do you want to do with it Stacy racer.

If the lift is for mama, then I would consider long arms. Even at 4 inches the ride quality improves a lot (less sharp jerks on the bumps). I have a RE long arm about 5.25 or so and the TJ is fine on any trail around. The thing with mine is I have an original 3 inch lift which was ok, but still causes issues with rear drive shaft angles, then I went up with ACOS spacers so I can set exactly how high I ride vs tire size and the tail doesn't get all saggy.

I have run mine with 3 inch short arms, 4.5 inches with short arms and 5.25 with long arms. there is absolutely no comparision with the long arms....so if you have the money i would encourage long arms!

dang that was long...sorry

if you do a RE 3.5 inch long arm, you will have good ride and it comes with most things.

you will need the slip yoke eliminator and a new rear drive shaft. You can leave the front factory one on for quite awhile.

If you put the lift on, then measure/order the Woody, it should work fine. Mine is 8 years old with the same u joints...and I'm going to put another Woody up front.

See how fast things go sideways and now when some one see's a thread of interest they may get good advice and ideas they end up reading pages of wise alicky off topic stuff. P.S don't be offended just look at it from someone looking for a straight informative thread. Thanks folks.

I had one thing to update, since you are thinking long arm..maybe I should pipe in some brand name information.

If I built my TJ again, I would use the AEV Nth degree 4.5 inch long arm system. This is probably the gold standard (gold credit card required) system for TJs.

I like the RE lift and the radius arm front actually works nice.

Rock Krawler has a reasonable reputation, though I am not sold on their use of so many heim joints.

Everything Teraflex I have used I had to rebuild (including my new rear adjustable track bar) right out of the box.

Use a brand that comes complete (esp if going 4 or more inches) with adjustable track bars. Old Man Emu shocks and steering stabilizer really work great up here and I don't think I would use anything else on a TJ.

...gasp....
I'm done.

Now here is on topic again. 3.5 or 4.5 inch lift. I don't think ill ever put 35's on there so a 4.5 might not be feasible. Warranty. ....Now who is going to have the best warranty out there. From what I heard BDS has a no ask warranty. ?????

So with the Lift... I decided not to go with a $3000 suspension.
Is there anything that anyone knows of that is a good offroad/onroad suspension for no more than 1500?

Dr Brian
12-01-2010, 08:18 PM
old man emu 2 inch with a one inch JKS body lift. You can mostly run 33s at that set up.

you appear to be into jeeps, so you know that even 3-4 inch short arms lifts may cause drive line vibration and require upgrading to adjustable track bars...my first lift was a 'simple' 3 inch that turned into a junkyard dog of added components.

Postal
12-02-2010, 06:19 AM
Well there is a 3 inch Body lift on it right now. So just a 2 inch Suspension and leave the Body lift on it?

Dr Brian
12-04-2010, 09:01 AM
That would minimize your changes in steering (bump steer, aligment issues) for sure...you may not have to have an adjustable track bar, though I would watch how centered the axle stays.

I always give a thumbs down for body lifts over an inch...they give you altitude w/o benefit of suspension travel. If that is set up already and you like it, you may not have to change the lift at all do you? It seems even 33s might fit (barely) so long as you are running wheels with about 3.5 inches of back spacing (non-factory).

I think im going to go ahead and go with a BDS 3 inch suspension. Decent price and heard good things plus lifetime warranty.
Im just debating on when to get it, since there hasnt been monthy runs or anything...so whats the point of spending money on it if its not getting used :(:smiliecrybaby2:
